The price of roads in Ukraine Viktor Medved.

A road full of potholes, a car full of potholes. Even if you are a mere mortal, even if you are a deputy, no mandate can protect you from a pothole. The journalists of "Dostalo!" investigated how and who profits from the broken Ukrainian roads.

There is no limit to the ingenuity of Ukrainians. If they can't fix the potholes, they will build a service station near the broken road - as they say, you need to make money without leaving the cash register. But no service station can actually tame either the wild Ukrainian roads or the officials who are supposed to repair them.

- "I think Ukravtodor officials are mainly interested in lining their own pockets, so there is no question of quality or quantity, only the amount of kickbacks," says Viktor Medvid, head of a consulting company. "Because of these kickbacks, they are interested in large projects where they can get them and in the largest possible amount of bribes. This is possible when the estimated amount is inflated and all types of construction work are not performed.

For example, according to the road construction technology, the skating rink should pass through five times, but it only passes through two. For officials, it's a savings, but for car owners, it's a poor quality road that will break down in a few years. This is what happened to the Odesa highway: half a billion dollars were invested in the road to Ukraine's southern pearl. Less than ten years later, the asphalt simply disappeared in some places.

However, this situation is good for the highway. Road repairs are a gold mine. While motorists are moaning, officials are dividing the money for fixing the roads. In the Sokal district of Lviv region, thousands were written off for non-existent repairs. In general, the local road company has gotten its hands dirty with the "optimization" and operation of district roads. Perhaps more than once, as the prosecutor's office is currently investigating. In the documents for April, the roads are shown as repaired and decorated, but in reality they are either pits or ditches.
